Cloth and Shadows with Cas Holmes - 10th & 11th October 2020
Cas Homes studied in Fine Art, Maidstone College of Art (UCA) in the eighties before a further study in Japanese art, textiles and paper making in Japan under a Japan Foundation Fellowship and a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship. S. Cas has also published work including; Textile Landscape, The Found Object in Textile Art, Stitch Stories, and Connected Cloth.
Cloth and Shadows
A mixed media workshop running for 2 days using paper, mixed media, found materials and textiles, as a means of exploring marks and lines in drawing and collage.
This workshop will emphasise the line as an extension of mark making including machine and /or hand stitching. Through layered paper and textile methods develop rich and exciting marks which, when, combined with your own art techniques creating complex layered dimensional pieces and providing a different perspective to your work.
Creative exercises will look at both sides of the work, the front and the back, leading to extending drawings onto cloth (linen, cottons, muslins, and combining them with various papers. A brief introduction to Dispersed Dying & Dye Sublimation process techniques
Techniques of distressing, layering, which have been adapted from use in Japanese textile and paper crafts. Introduction to ‘wet applique (lamination) as a temporary stiffener for cloth and paper.
Discussing ideas for working with the papers such as methods of layering, stitching together. tearing, building towards textured surfaces.
Developing the stitched mark as an additional line. Drawing and marks with threads
Creating own pieces using techniques.
