Fair Isle Knitting Creative Workshop with Nicki Merrall
16 March 2019
Join knit designer Nicki Merrall at Hope & Elvis to learn stranded colour work techniques used in Fair Isle and the Shetland Isles.
Fair Isle knitting is justifiably admired for the variety of patterns and the beautiful use of colour. Join Nicki to learn about different stranded colourwork traditions as well as practising techniques, designing your own swatch or knitting a project.
The Fair Isle workshop will start with a designers ‘show and tell’. Nicki will show you some of her designs and swatches featuring stranded colourwork, as well as some inspirational knitting books. If you are new to stranded colourwork you'll practise techniques by working a swatch in rows. Then you’ll use simple motifs, using two or three colours, to make a small project or a swatch of your own colourwork design. If you'd like to improve your technique you'll start by working a small swatch in the round. Then you’ll use more complex motifs, using several colours, to make a larger project or a swatch of your own colourwork design.
• stranded colourwork beginner: (you can cast-on and off, knit and purl and follow a basic pattern).
• stranded colour work improver: (you can knit in the round and, although not necessarily an expert, you can strand and weave yarns when doing stranded colour work).
