Stitched Animal Portraits with Jo Smith - 17th July 2021
I can't tell what a pleasure it is to be welcoming Jo to Hope and Elvis, I have long been a fan of Jo's beautiful work and the stories behind the pieces. i am lucky to have a stitched mouse in the studio and also 2 stitched portraits that Jo kindly lent to us for our open studios last year that are still out for you to admire.... have a sneaky feeling this workshop is going to be pretty special!
about Jo Smith
Based on the East Coast, Jo is a textile artist, tutor, and an Embroiderers Guild Scholar whose work focuses primarily on the domestic environment and our relationships within it.
She is interested in all that makes us human - the little histories, personal stories, memories, emotions, and experiences - the connections we make and the traces we leave
Often triggered by small, seemingly insignificant events (such as a gift from the cat on a rainy evening), her work is firmly rooted in empathy, exploring loss and sorrow using a varied range of materials and media.
She has a BA(Hons) in Fine & Applied Art and an MA in Fine Art and is also a member of the contemporary textile groups Prism and SEW, her work has also been featured in the books ‘Stitch Stories’ and ‘Textile Art Around the World’.
