Space (in your mind) for a New Plan with Tilleke Schwarz

18th and 19th May - FULL please contact bookings@hopeandelvis.com to be added to the wait list

We are very lucky to have Tillkeke Schwarz flying in once again to host a weekend workshop with us at Hope & Elvis

Tilleke makes contemporary hand embroidered art that reminds of graffiti and of traditional samplers with a mixture of graphic humour along with text. The humour in her work is typical for her Jewish background, a mixture of a laugh and a tear. Daily life, mass media, traditional samplers and cats are major sources of inspiration. The result is a mixture of content, graphic quality and fooling around. The work can be understood as a kind of visual poetry. Every work contains narrative elements. Not really complete stories, with a beginning, a storyline, and an end. On the contrary, the viewer is invited to decipher connections or to create them.

In this workshop participants will enjoy the adventure of designing while working, resulting in inspiration for a new work. The focus is on design, allowing participants to design a new work in their own style and telling their own story. The workshop will start with some exercises in mixed media and collage on paper. These fast techniques on paper allow participants to experiment and to try out new ideas. Demonstrations will include Tillekes’ favourite embroidery technique (couching). The workshop will have an emphasis on hand embroidery, but it is perfectly all right to incorporate any other (textile) technique, or use the sewing machine. The workshop will be illustrated with small lectures. Special attention to the importance of SPACE in your work, space as part of your composition and space at the start which allows you to add ideas while working. Hand stitching is fun but very time consuming, so please do not expect to finish a new work in these two days. The aim is to leave the workshop with plenty of new ideas and make a start with a new work on cloth.
